Yuan ai massimi, ma resta sempre “cheap”

Obama lo ha chiesto a gran voce e alla fine la rivalutazione dello Yuan è arrivata, quantomeno contro dollaro USA., anche se la rivalutazione in corso non soddisfa affatto il Governo a stelle e strisce.

While the yuan strengthened above 6.5 per dollar last week for the first time since 1993, U.S. leaders aren’t satisfied and New York Senator Chuck Schumer said legislation to punish curbs on appreciation is “an economic imperative.” Economists predict the currency will gain 3 percent by year-end, the most among the so-called BRIC nations, Bloomberg surveys show. An index tracking yuan-denominated debt in Hong Kong has rallied to a record.
“The acceleration of yuan appreciation is likely to happen ahead of such meetings,” said Liu Li-gang, chief China economist at Australia & New Zealand Banking Group in Hong Kong who formerly worked for the World Bank. “China needs to tackle rising costs for imports and that means that policy makers will increasingly rely on the exchange rate.” (Source Bloomberg)

Quindi la Guerra valutaria continua imperterrita malgrado la rivalutazione della moneta cinese che continua in modo regolare ma non sufficientemente veloce. Perché alla Cina sta bene così. Anche perché il rafforzamento dello Yuan è soprattutto dovuto all’indebolimento del Dollaro USA contro tutte le valute globali. La cosa dovrebbe urtare la Cina soprattutto in virtù dei copiosi investimenti dfatti sulla valuta USA.

May 3 (Reuters) – China need not worry about the effect of the weakening dollar on its foreign exchange reserves and should not quicken the pace of yuan appreciation because of “temporary” factors, a former deputy foreign exchange regulator said on Tuesday.

La cosa però non preoccupa proprio perchè la Cina sta progressivamente diversificando. E quindi è addirittura venditrice lei stessa di Dollari USA. E malgrado tutto ciò, lo Yuan è ancora troppo basso…

Asian countries need to raise interest rates and let their currencies strengthen to contain inflation and prevent their economies from overheating, the International Monetary Fund said in a report on April 28. Steven Barnett, deputy division chief in the Asia-Pacific department of the IMF, said in March the yuan is “substantially below levels consistent with medium-term fundamentals.”
Senator Schumer estimated in January the currency was undervalued by as much as 40 percent. The third-ranking Democrat in Congress said April 28 that a week-long trip to China, which included a meeting with central bank Governor Zhou Xiaochuan, had left him “more convinced than ever that legislation is needed to force countries like China that manipulate their currencies to play by the rules.”
“With the yuan remaining undervalued on almost any rational measure, there is nothing but pressure for the currency to appreciate,” said Patrick Bennett, a Hong Kong-based strategist at Standard Bank Group Ltd. “Thus why not accelerate around the time of these meetings and be seen to be doing the right thing.” (Source: Bloomberg)

Il grafico che vi presento (con gli indici Hang Seng di Hong Kong e lo Shanghai composite) mette in chiara evidenza la progressiva rivalutazione dello Yuan cinese e anche la “forte” sterzata al rialzo degli ultimi mesi. In realtà, come vedrete in un post dei prossimi giorni, lo Yuan dovrebbe essere a delle valutazioni molto più generose sia contro dollaro USA ma anche contro le altre valute.
Ma come ben sapete, il coltello dalla parte del manico ce l’hanno loro. E allora… non ci resta che subire l’imposizione delle nuove economie che fino a ieri subivano in silenzio ma che oggi sono talmente potenti ed influenti che finiranno col triturare la “vecchia Economia”.
